The New York University men's soccer team tied New Jersey City University 3-3 on Wednesday, September 21, at Robert L. McNulty Field in Jersey City, NJ.
The game was scoreless for a mere 26 seconds until
Tristan Medios-Simon latched onto a
Petter Aasa ball and fired it home for the lead.
"We should have put the game away in the first 15 minutes with the number of quality chances we created," said Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "We need to convert those and learn how to close out games."
Five minutes after NCJU equalized at 22:46, the Violets were reduced to 10 men as
Richie Cornell was penalized for a handball in the box and subsequently received a red card.
"The handball was a very harsh call," explained Wyant. "
Jax Hindmarch stepped in to play as the outside back after Richie's ejection."
Goalkeeper
Lucas Doucette saved the ensuing penalty kick, one of his 13 saves on the afternoon.
The Gothic Knights capitalized on their manpower advantage by scoring 36 seconds into the second half.
"We gave up some sloppy goals," said Wyant. "The three goals we conceded today were all hope and pray with a ball in behind and aggressive players running in behind."
Medios-Simon dragged NYU back level at 57:25 before putting the Violets ahead four minutes later with his third goal of the game.
"Tristan was the deal today," continued Wyant. "He had a hat trick and many dangerous opportunities."
Bashar Elsharif of NJCU equalized at 83:55 to bring the game to its final scoreline, as neither team could break through in the extra 20 minutes.
"I'm proud that we played about 90 minutes with 10 players," concluded Wyant. "We never gave up and almost got the winner several times."
"The key for our team moving forward is to maintain the level of effort we displayed today," added assistant coach
Ryan Finnigan. "We have to carry that effort into our training sessions and into our upcoming games."
BTW...
-Aasa led the Violets with 5 shots.
"Petter played several positions and was massive on the field," explained Wyant.
-
Owen Smith and
Robert Shellow each recorded an assist.
The Violets return to action on Tuesday, September 27, when they take on Drew University at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
