The New York University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 non-conference match to visiting Drew University on Tuesday, September 27, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Penalty kicks proved to be the difference in the game as Drew (5-2-2) was able to convert on two opportunities, while NYU (3-3-2) failed to connect on its attempt.
"I thought we started kind of slow and they made us pay," said NYU Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "They had a penalty kick in the first eight minutes."
Drew's first penalty kick came just 7:30 into the came when Joe Sollod was taken down in the box by an NYU defender. Sollod connected on the penalty kick attempt, beating Violet goalkeeper
Lucas Doucette.
NYU had a chance to tie the contest early in the second half with a penalty kick of its own after a Ranger committed a handball in the box.
Petter Aasa took the kick for the Violets, but Drew goalkeeper Stephan Lukianov guessed correctly and made the save.
"That was a game-changer as we were able to earn a penalty kick and their goalkeeper responded with a big save," added Wyant.
The Rangers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute on another successful penalty kick from Sollod. This time Doucette guessed correctly, but the shot was placed perfectly and he was unable to get a piece of it.
NYU will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Cleveland, OH, for its first University Athletic Association (UAA) match-up of the year against Case Western Reserve University. Kickoff is slated for 1:30pm.
