The New York University women's soccer team improved to 3-0 this season with a 3-1 victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2-2) on Saturday, September 10. The victory came on the first day of the Engineering Cup, hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU scored the game's first goal when
Steph Ho headed in a
Teressa Fazio corner kick just 7:59 into the contest.
"That first goal helped set the tone," said NYU Head Coach
Michele Canning. "It was extremely hot out there and we talked before the game about how important getting an early start would be."
The Violets doubled their lead later in the first half when
Charlotte Herbertz received a pass from
Alex Benedict and deposited it in the back of the net.
NYU gave up its first goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half as MIT's Selin Selman connected on a free kick just outside the box. Violet goalkeeper
Cassie Steinberg was able to get her hands on the shot, but it trickled past her to cut the NYU lead in half.
In the second half, Fazio added an insurance goal to give the Violets a comfortable two-goal lead.
Highlights:
-
Lexi Clarke assisted on Fazio's second-half tally. The senior captain has recorded a point in each of NYU's first three games.
- Steinberg made five saves in net.
- Benedict, Ho and
Marquel Love each tallied two shots to lead NYU.
"We have a tough one tomorrow against Stevens Tech," added Canning. "But we're looking to recover quickly from today's game and carry the momentum into tomorrow.
The Violets will be back in action tomorrow when they take on host Stevens Tech on day two of the Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ. Kickoff between NYU and the Ducks is slated for 3:30pm.
