ResultsThe New York University women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the 2015-16 season, falling to Case Western Reserve University 7-2 on Sunday, April 3, in Cleveland, OH.
The Violets (5-1) came into the contest ranked #30 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while the Spartans (10-3) are ranked #22.
NYU suffered its first defeat after dropping all three doubles matches and winning only two of the six singles contests.
"We had a long and late match on Saturday (a victory over Oberlin College) and we came out flat in doubles," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We neeeded to play with more energy."
The Violets' two victories were registered by
Flyora Shiyanova at #2 singles and
Vanessa Scott at #3. Both matches were straight-set wins.
The #1 singles match was a tight back-and-forth affair between the Violets'
Carmen Lai and the Spartans' Nithya Kanagasegar, who pulled out the 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4 win.
"Case is very good," Choy explained. "Hopefully, we will get another chance to face them at the UAA (University Athletic Association) Championship."
The UAA Championship is set for April 22-24 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The Violets next return to action on Saturday, April 9, when they host SUNY Geneseo at 12:00 pm at the Stadium Tennis Club in the Bronx, NY.
