The New York University women's tennis team defeated the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute by a score of 6-3 on Sunday, March 6, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets won two out of three doubles matches in addition to their four singles victories. NYU is now 3-0 in dual matches, while RPI dropped to 2-3.
Leading the way for the squad were
Carmen Lai and
Vanessa Scott, each of whom cruised to straight-set victories at #1 and #3 singles, respectively. The two paired with
Flyora Shiyanova and
Laila El Dessouki, respectively, at first and second doubles and recorded resounding wins there, as well.
"Up 2-1 out of the doubles, Carmen and Vanessa continued their solid play by winning their matches easily," explained Head Coach
Horace Choy.
At #2 singles, Shiyanova was able to overcome a tough start to record a comeback three-set victory.
"Flyora had a very competitive match, but she showed her resolve by winning in a third-set tiebreaker," continued Choy.
The Violets return to action on Sunday, March 13 at the Stadium Tennis Center when they take on University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Brandeis University at 11:00 am on Senior/Family Day.
