Women's Basketball Falls to Carnegie Mellon

Road Trip Starts with a Loss

The New York University women's basketball team, ranked #7 in the nation by D3hoops.com and the USA Today, was defeated by Carnegie Mellon University, 70-57, at the Skibo Gymnasium in Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday night, February 5.

The Violets fell to 17-2 overall and 6-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Tartans are now 15-4, 4-4.

Megan Dawe was NYU's high scorer with 17 points. She also contributed six rebounds.

However, a pair of Tartans, produced doubles-doubles as Jackie Hudepohl (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Lisa Murphy (16 points, 14 rebounds) gave CMU the edge.

"Over the last three years since Murphy has been in the UAA, it really has been a knockdown fight between these two offensive forces in the low block," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "Both teams really rely on them for their inside presence. They battled. They came to play."

After falling behind early to the Tartans, Kaitlyn Read led NYU back with seven straight points including a big three (4:16) to help the Violets gain the lead before the first-quarter buzzer.

The Violet continued to play efficiently, starting the second quarter with a 10-2 run. However, Carnegie Mellon then went on a 15-2 run in a four-minute span during the second quarter to retake the lead, which its never relinquished for the remainder of the contest.

"They have five starters that can all put the ball in the basket," Hall-Gregory explained.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Read added 16 points and nine rebounds.

- The Tartans held the advantage over the Violets in shooting percentage (.444 to .362), free-throw pct. (.909 to .529) and in rebounding (45 to 30).

NYU returns to action on Sunday, February 7, at the Adelbert Gym to face off against Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm.
