The New York University women's basketball team, ranked #7 by both
USA Today and
D3hoops.com, dropped its second game in a row with a 67-65 loss to Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon, February 7, in Cleveland, OH, at the Adelbert Gymnasium.
The Violets overall record fell to 17-3 and their University Athletic Association (UAA) record to 6-3. Case Western Reserve's record rose to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in the UAA.
NYU was up by five points at the end of the first quarter at 17-12. CWRU then captured the lead by outscoring NYU 27-17 in the second period, including a 13-2 run highlighted by Hillary Hellmann's three buckets from beyond the arc. The Spartans led 39-34 at the break.
Maya Wasowicz helped bring NYU back with eight consecutive points between the 6:27 mark and the 4:15 mark of the third quarter to give the Violets a 46-41 lead.
Kaitlyn Read eventually extended NYU's lead to eight with a free throw with 2:47 remaining in the quarter.
However, the Violets could not maintain their lead and the Spartans went into the final quarter up one, 55-54.
With a just over a minute remaining, a
Liv Linebarger three-pointer tied the score at 65-65. Unfortunately, a late NYU foul sent the Spartans' Jessica McCoy to the free-throw line with eight seconds left. She made both shots to seal the win for CWRU.
"If you are inconsistent in basketball against good teams, then the opposing teamd will exploit that inconsistency," NYU Head Coach
Lauren Hall-Gregory stated. "We were inconsistent on the court today and in practice this week. Going forward, my staff and I will challenge them to play hard and play a full 40 minutes."
HIGHLIGHTS:- Despite the loss, Read accomplished a historic feat for the Violets. With 3:51 remaining in the contest, the junior guard sank a pair of free throws, the latter of which was the 1,000th point of her career. She finished the game with 18 points and six rebounds and is now the 15th player in NYU program history to reach the prestigious 1,000-point plateau.
