The New York University baseball team completed its first series of the season on Sunday afternoon, February 28, against Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA.
After dropping the first two games of the three-game series on Saturday, the Violets (0-3) were defeated 11-2 by the Generals (10-4) on Sunday.
"We just were not mentally prepared to play today," said NYU Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "We need to be more focused on situational baseball."
Rookie
Colman Hendershot made his first-career start on the bump for the Violets after starting at first base in the previous two contests. The 6-foot-1 righthander went 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. He also gave up one unearned run.
Six other NYU pitchers combined for 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs.
The Violets scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth to trim the Generals' lead to two at the time.
With two outs and the bases loaded,
Jake Smith reached on a fielder's choice after the Washington & Lee third baseman botched the throw.
Jack Walter scored from third on the play, while
Christian Bloom was able to cross the plate from second base.
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Adrian Spitz finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Bloom was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
NYU will return for its home-opener, a doubleheader, when it hosts John Jay College at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, on Tuesday afternoon, March 1. First-pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
