Match-By-Match ResultsThe New York University women's tennis team opened its 2016 spring season with a 6-3 win over Swarthmore College on Saturday, February 27, in Swarthmore, PA.
The Violets won all three doubles matches and split the six singles match-ups to account for the final margin.
"I thought we showed some nerves early on, but then we settled in and took control," said NYU Head Coach Horace Choy.It was a strong opening day for a trio of NYU players who won boith their singles and doubles matches.
Carmen Lai won both her #1 singles (6-0, 6-0) and #1 doubles matches (8-4).
Flyora Shiyanova paired with Lai in doubles, then won her #2 singles match 6-1, 6-2. NYU's third multi-winner was
Vanessa Scott, who was victorious at #2 doubles 8-5 (with
Laila El Dessouki) and at #3 singles (6-1, 6-1).
"Our top three really took the drama out of the match by dominating their singles matches," Choy explained. "They played real well and got us off to a great start."
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Madeline King and
Nicole Schnabel combined for a 9-7 win at #3 doubles. King also fell in a three-set tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 11-9) at # 4 singles.

Jazmin Colling rallied to force a tiebreaker at #6 singles, but fell 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
The Violets return to action on Friday, March 4, when they face William Smith College in Geneva, NY. First serve is set for 6:00 pm.
