The New York University softball team opened up its 2016 season at the Triangle Grand Slam Classic, facing William Peace College in Cary, North Carolina, on Saturday, February 27.
The Violets (0-1) fell to the Pacers (7-4) by a score of 5-1.
Down 2-0 in the top of the second inning, the Violets came out swinging as junior
Molly Webber started off the inning with a single to center field. That was followed by another single by freshman
Ashley Mains.
Next up, in her first collegiate at-bat, was freshman
Claire Stefanelli. With runners on first and second, she laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both. Sophomore
Natalie Evans then hit a groundout to second base to score the Violets' first run of the season.

ophomore Sage Scheiwiller finished with two hits.
Freshman Karissa Zubulake started for the Violets and suffered the loss. She allowed five earned runs on only three hits, but walked five in 3.1 innings. HIGHLIGHTS: - Freshman
Olivia Mould came on in relief and shutout the Pacers during her stint. In 2.2 innings she gave up only two hits and a walk, while striking out four.
- Stefanelli made multiple inning-ending catches near the left field fence.

The Violets will return to action later on Saturday as they face Greensboro College in their second game of the Triangle Grand Slam Classic. The first pitched is schedule for 3:00 PM.
