The New York University men's and women's tennis teams begin their spring 2016 seasons against Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA, on Saturday, February 27. First-serve for the women is scheduled for 9:00 am, while the men's match is expected to begin at 2:00 pm.
The women begin the spring ranked 18th in the Northeast Region and are led by seniors
Jazmin Collings and
Madeline King. During the 2014-15 season, Collings advanced to the semifinals of the NYS Division III Championships, while King compiled a 13-8 singles record, the second-highest win total on the team.
Freshman
Alice McGinty is ranked #15 in the Northeast Region and senior
Carmen Lai is ranked #23. Each posted 9-1 overall records in the fall and advanced to the singles semifinals of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships.
"I expect continued success from our returning players," said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "I expect our freshman class to also do well, and I am looking forward to seeing how they will compete in dual matches for the first time."
The men's tennis team begins its spring season ranked 14th in the Northeast Region. The Violets are led by senior
Sidd Thangirala, who advanced to the third round of the 2014-15 fall ITA Northeast Regional Championships and earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Player of the Week honors last spring.
Also a top returner for NYU is junior
Umberto Setter, who advanced to the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships in September.
"I am looking for our returners to step into roles and help the team win," said Choy. "I am also looking for some of our freshmen to step up."
Following this opening weekend, the women's team continues its season with another road match at William Smith College in Geneva, NY, on March 4, while the men travel to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, on March 5.
