Violets Defeat Vassar at Columbia

Results vs.:   Columbia     Vassar    Sacred Heart

The New York University women's fencing team faced three opponents at Columbia University's Historical Meet on Wednesday, February 10, in Manhattan.

The Violets, now 6-12 this season, dropped a 20-7 decision to the host Lions, then defeated Vassar College 16-11 before falling in their final match, 18-9, to Sacred Heart University.

Freshman Hannah Bennett recorded the most victories for NYU over the three matches. She won five epee bouts, including a perfect 2-0 vs. Sacred Heart.

Freshman Anastasiya Muravyeva led the foil team with four victories, while freshman Jacqueline Tubbs led the sabre squad with four wins.

"We were missing a couple of our starters due to injury," NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando explained. "Columbia is one of the best teams in the country, and our result against Sacred Heart mirrored what happend earlier this season."

The Violets were defeated by the Pioneers by the exact same score back on December 6.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Sophomore Marissa Posner recorded four sabre victories for the Violets.

- Junior captain Cydney Williams went 3-0 against Vassar in foil.

Several members of the team will be back in action this weekend at the U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships in Cleveland, OH.
