Women's Soccer Ties Brandeis

Violets and Judges Knotted 1-1 in Regular-Season Finale

The New York University women's soccer team ended its regular season with a 1-1 draw against Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY, on Saturday, November 5.

The Violets (10-3-5, 1-2-4 UAA) scored first in the contest. At 18:06, Lexi Clarke beat her defenders and her shot from the top of the box found the left corner of the net.

NYU maintained its advantage until there was less than 15 remaining in the second half. Following several minutes of a strong offensive attack by Brandeis, the Judges finally knotted the score when Sam Volpe flicked a pass to Cidney Moscovitch inside the box and she beat NYU keeper Cassie Steinberg at 75:57.

Neither team scored again through the two 10-minute overtime periods.

"This was a game we needed to win," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "We just didn't play well enough in the second half."

The Violets were able to stay in the game throughout despite being outshot 23-8 and despite Brandeis' huge advantage (20-1) in corner kicks.

"Brandeis is a very, very good team," Canning explained. "They played aggressively and with a lot of energy."

NOATABLES:

- Steinberg finished with 12 saves.

- Clarke finished with a team-high three shots.

- Isabelle Turner was the only Violet, other than Clarke, to record a shot on goal.

- NYU's six graduating seniors: Clarke, Steinberg, Sophie Frank, Lina Diaz, Julie Glover, and Mimi Tran were honored in pre-game ceremonies.

The Violets have now concluded their 2016 regular-season schedule and await a potential postseason bid.
