The New York University men's soccer team defeated host Baruch College 6-1 on Monday, October 10, at Randall's Island Field in Manhattan.
Tristan Medios-Simon opened the scoring with his team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Violets at 5:07 before Baruch equalized at 20:34.
"We changed our warm-up in order to get the team focused and mentally ready. It paid off and we got the quick goal," explained Head Coach
Kim Wyant. "After we gave up another soft, sloppy goal, I reminded them at halftime about being mentally stronger."
The Violets had opened up a 4-1 lead by halftime after goals from
Owen Smith,
Nic Notaro and
David Victor.
Ricardo Mitrano converted a penalty kick at 63:36 and Victor headed home a Notaro cross at 77:23 to put NYU ahead 6-1.
"We had excellent defending throughout the team. We got pressure on the ball and we closed their options behind," said Wyant. "It's something we improved on since we played Carnegie Mellon (a 3-0 loss)."
Highlights:
- The Violets outshot Baruch 23-10 and had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Mitrano and Smith each recorded two assists, while Notaro, Medios-Simon and
Bryan Walsh contributed one apiece.
- NYU goalkeeper
Lucas Doucette made three saves.
The Violets will be back in action Friday evening, October 14, when they travel to St. Louis, MO, for a 8:00 pm (CT) kickoff against Washington University in St. Louis.
