The New York University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday, September 4, in Claremont, CA.
The Violets (1-2) began with a tough five-set loss (25-15, 16-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-7) to the University of Wisconsin-Stout (3-0). Both teams began the first set with no more than a three-point lead until the Blue Devils made a mid-set push to pull ahead and eventually take the 1-0 advantage.
The Violets came out strong in the second behind
Rayne Ellis' team-best six kills. Strong serving from
Brooke Tannahill late gave NYU the advantage and tied the match 1-1.
"Brooke's performance was solid for both matches," NYU Head Coach
Jolie Ward said. "She is providing consistent leadership both on and off the court."
NYU came from behind in the third set, erasing the Blue Devil's two-point lead early on.
Nicole Frias finished off the set with two big kills for the Violets to clinch the 2-1 lead.
Strong serving in the fourth from Annie Sigh gave the Violets the early 9-3 lead, but the Blue Devils went on a 9-1 streak late to pick up the win and force a decisive fifth set. Wisconsin-Stout grabbed an early five-point lead in the final set and the Violets did not recover en route to the Blue Devils' victory.
NYU's second match was a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-15, 25-11) to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (1-0).
MATCH ONE HIGHLIGHTS: -
Shelby King and Singh led NYU offensively, notching 16 and 12 kills, respectively. King added 14 digs, while Singh finished with 10.

Daryl Mitchell finished the contest with 43 assists and seven digs.
- Tannahill notched 16 digs.
MATCH TWO HIGHLIGHTS: - Singh finished with a team-high seven kills and also notched seven digs.
"Annie contributed solid play from the front and back row in both matches," Ward said.

Alexis Jackson recorded nine digs and five kills.

Elissa Davila-Shiau assumed the setting duties and dished out 13 assists.
The Violets continue play in the Pacific Coast Classic tomorrow, Saturday September 5. They take on Occidental College at 9:00 am (PST) followed by Pomona-Pitzer at 11:15 am (PST) in Claremont.
