The New York University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, September 5, the second and final day of the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, CA.
The Violets (2-3) began with a four-set win (29-27, 19-25, 26-24, 25-17) against the Occidental College Tigers (1-2) as
Rayne Ellis led the way with 12 kills.
Crucial blocks from
Nicole Frias clinched the first set for NYU over the Tigers.
"Nicole stepped up and showed true leadership in today's matches," NYU Head Coach
Jolie Ward said.
After dropping the second set, the Violets came from behind in the third with a late-game push led by Frias and
Annie Singh on the front line.
Brooke Tannahill kept NYU alive in set four with strong serving and defense and finished with 18 digs in the match. Ellis secured the victory with a kill.
"It was very crucial for the team to win the first match today," Ward said. "We were able to solidify a lineup and build the team chemistry on the court."
NYU's second match was a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19) to Pomona-Pitzer College (3-1). The Violets started the match strong and won the first set, but were unable to maintain their momentum.
MATCH ONE HIGHLIGHTS: -
Alexis Jackson had 13 kills for the match.

Daryl Mitchell finished with 33 assists and 11 digs.
- Singh added eight kills.
MATCH TWO HIGHLIGHTS: - Mitchell finished with a career-best 38 assists.
- Singh led the offense with 12 kills.
The Violets are back in action this Wednesday, September 9, at 6:00 pm when they host Montclair State University at the Coles Sports Center.
