The New York University men's soccer team was defeated by Drew University 1-0 on the road on Tuesday night, September 29, in Madison, NJ.
The Violets (3-5) played the Rangers (8-1-1) tough all night on a rain-soaked field. NYU stayed even with Drew most of the night and attempted just one less shot (16-15). Additionally, both squads notched five shots on goal.
"I was very proud of the way we played and did some good things," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant. "We're just going to keep doing our research and try and find a way to minimize our mistakes. Once we do that in practice and start to carry it over to our games, we'll be dangerous."The only goal of the night came in the 36th minute as the Rangers' Bass Etta-Ashu broke away from the Violet backline but was tripped in the box. He went on to convert the penalty kick to give Drew the 1-0 lead.
The Violets, however, had two quality chances to knot it up offensively. The first came in the 68th minute when
Inder Sharma got the jump off an NYU free kick just outside the box. The rookie was able to clear two Drew defenders and get his head on the ball and direct it toward the Ranger net, but the ball hit the crossbar. The Violets' second chance came off some nice passing in front of the Drew net in the 85th minute.
Nic Notaro and
Malcolm Montilus set up
Deniz Oncu for an attempt inside the Rangers' box, but Drew goalkeeper John Marques was able to punch the ball up and over the crossbar.
"The guys played very good soccer tonight," continued Wyant. "The Drew goalkeeper made two or three very excellent saves, which was the difference."
