Men's Soccer Drops UAA Opener

Second-Half Surge Sparks Case to-4-1 win

The New York University men's soccer team lost its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener, falling to Case Western Reserve University 4-1 on Saturday, October 3, in Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Neither team scored in the first half, but the Spartans' Michael Balog connected on a header at 62:15 to brea the deadllock.

However, NYU (3-6, 0-1 UAA) responded quickly as Tristan Medios-Simon scored on a free kick just over four minutes later (66:25).

The game remained tied until 77:01 when Chirs Cvecko scored the first of his three goals for Case Western Reserve (9-1, 1-0 UAA) on a penalty kick. His last two goals came within three minutes of each other (85:50, 88:47) and clinched the win for the Spartans.

"I thought it was evenly-matched teams. We bent a litle when we gave up the first goal and then we earned it back on our free kick," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant. "But, we made some self-inflicted mistakes that we couldn't overcome."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU goalkeeper Lucas Doucette made five saves.

- Medios-Simon and four other Violets each had one shot on goal. Idy Watt and Petter Aasa each took two shots overall.

- NYU was outshot 19-11.

- Jacob Grindel recorded an assist for the Spartans.

"Case Western is a good team. They came in with a game plan and were very good individually on the ball," Wyant added. "But, we felt this game was winnable at haltime and it was just some silly mistakes that cost us."

The Violets return to action this Tuesday, October 6, when they face Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, NY, beginning at 7:00 pm.
