The New York University women's soccer team got off to a fast start on Thursday night, September 17, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. The Violets defeated DeSales University 3-1 after notching all three of their goals in the first half.
"We have been working a lot on finishing, and it is great to see it show by scoring three goals in the first half," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning.Sharon Lee was the first to crack the scoreboard for NYU (4-1). The sophomore defender took it by herself in the 22nd minute and launched one to the upper-right corner. DeSales (3-3) goalkeeper Haley Jacobs got her hands on the shot, but the ball managed to roll in as it hit the turf to give the Violets the early 1-0 advantage. It was Lee's first goal of the season and of her collegiate career.
Lexi Clarke joined the action for NYU in the 24th minute. The junior midfielder took a pass up the middle from Teresa Fazio and finished in the box for her first goal of the season to put the Violets up 2-0.
Sofi Toohey closed the scoring for NYU in the 43rd minute.
Royce Light chipped the ball to Toohey in the box after a scrum in front of the Bulldogs' net following a Violet corner kick. The senior co-captain put it through for the 3-0 advantage.
DeSales got their only tally of the game in the 71st minute after Megan Arnold split the NYU backline and passed through the middle to Angelica Bertola who put it past NYU goalkeeper
Cassie Steinberg. Other than that one blemish, the NYU junior recorded six saves on the night.
