Baseball Falls 10-5 to Mt. St. Vincent

Violets Drop Series Opener to Dolphins

The New York University baseball team was defeated 10-5 by the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, April 7, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets (7-15) began the game on a high note, taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Michael Vokulich RBI single.

Jarrett Weiss got the start against the Dolphins (5-15) and was perfect through his first two innings. Unfortunately, the sophomore was touched up for five runs in the top of the third and the Violets found themselves trailing 5-1 entering the home half.

"We didn't do the little things right in that inning, starting off with a hit batter and then not getting our second baseman over to first on the bunt was devastating," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "I didn't even think we should have been in a situation where we had to come back."

Weiss settled down after the third and did not give up another run for the remainder of his start, which lasted 7.0 innings and included six strikeouts.

NYU did strike back in the bottom of the third, putting two across the plate to trim Mt. St. Vincent's lead to 5-3. Vokulich knocked in another run on an infield single and David Wagner walked one in with the bases loaded.

The Violets eventually knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, CJ Picerni singled up the middle to score both Christian Bloom and Jeremy Wayne.

"It's good to see the team settle down and then be able to come back offensively. Those are solid attributes of teams that are working towards getting better and I expect that from them," continued Kimbler. "We just have to deal with a maturity level of what it takes to win and we'll be fine."

CMSV would score five more runs, two in the eighth and three in the ninth, to take the eventual five-run victory in what was the first game of a scheduled three-game series.

NOTABLES:

- Adrian Spitz had a nice day at the plate for NYU, going 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base.

- Picerni finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.

- Vokulich was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double.

"I think they each saw more pitches, which makes them better hitters," said Kimbler. "I'm always a big fan of taking a pitch when you've never seen a guy throw before so you can actually see his release point. It was a good day for them. They saw the ball well and hit fastballs."

NYU and the Dolphins will meet again tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 8, for a late doubleheader at MCU Park. First pitch for game one of the two scheduled seven-inning contests is set for 7:00 pm.
