The New York University women's tennis team lost to Emory University 9-0 in the first round of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Thursday, April 23. The championship is being held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The match, scheduled to begin at 9:00 am, was delayed by rain three separate times.
The #8-seeded Violets got off to a good start against the top-seeded Eagles, with junior
Carmen Lai and sophomore
Laila El Dessouki continuing their strong play in #1 doubles. However, Emory's top pair of Michelle Satterfield and Anna Fuhr came away with a close 8-5 victory. Emory also won the other two doubles matches more handily and headed into singles with a 3-0 lead.
In singles play, the Eagles won all six matches in straight sets to improve to 14-3. They now advance to the semifinals, where they will take on fourth-seeded University of Chicago. The Violets dropped to 4-5 on the season.
"Contrary to the score, the girls played well," said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "However, Emory is a notch above us and a notch above most teams in the country."
The Violets return to the court tomorrow to face #
5-seeded Case Western Reserve University in the consolation draw. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.
