The New York University baseball team split a doubleheader against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Saturday, April 11, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Violets won game one 15-3 before falling in game two 10-1.
Chase Denison started the game-one victory and pitched effectively after allowing two St. Joseph's runs in the top of the first. The freshman southpaw did not allow another earned run over his 5.2 innings of work en route to his second victory of the season.
"Chase settled down after the first inning and started getting ahead of hitters," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "He did a great job today."
Denison benefited from a potent Violets' offense, which had 15 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs. Five different NYU hitters had multi-hit games in the victory, including
David Wagner who led the squad with three.
CJ Picerni and
Scott Hilbrandt led the way with 3 RBIs each.
"It's always great when you're scoring runs," added Kimbler.
St. Joseph's was able to quiet the NYU bats in game two as the Bears held the Violets to just five hits and one run.
Billy Griffo had the lone RBI for NYU as he doubled home
Sy Cohen in the bottom of the seventh.
Game One Highlights:- Picerni reached base safely in all five plate appearances. The sophomore was 2-for-2 with three walks and had a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Two of Wagner's three hits were doubles. The freshman also had two RBIs.
-
Jeremy Wayne finished the contest 2-for-4 and also reached base safely with a walk.
-
Adrian Spitz singled in his only at-bat to increase his hitting streak to 13 games.
-
Matthew Millus pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.
Game Two Highlights:-
Jarret Weiss started the game for NYU and struck out two in five innings.
- Wagner and Picerni continued their impressive afternoons as each went 1-for-2.
"We had a good meeting prior to the games today and I thought the guys came out ready to play.
They played aggressively. They hit fastballs. Our pitchers threw strikes," Kimbler explained. "Today, our starting pitching was good enough and our hitting was good enough and we came away with a split. That's a pretty good day."
The Violets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 14, for a 2:00 pm doubleheader against Cairn University at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
Live stats will be available.
