The New York University baseball team swept Cairn University 10-4 and 3-0 on Tuesday, April 14, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets (11-18) received outstanding pitching performances from starters
Cameron Serapilio-Frank (first game) and
Michael Vokulich (second game). Serapilio-Frank went six innings in the opener and allowed four runs while striking out seven. Vokulich went the distance in game two, shutting out the Highlanders (6-18) and allowing only five hits and facing only 24 batters.
It was the NYU Division III baseball program's first-ever complete game shutout.
"Great pitching performances by our guys today," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "They threw strikes and pitched to contact. They both were economical and made it easier for our defense to stay on its toes."
In evening his record at 4-4 on the season Serapilio was helped by an NYU offense that struck for 11 hits and a defense that did not make an error.
After scoring the first run of the contest, the Violets found themselves down 2-1 heading into the home half of the second inning. The squad scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead, highlighted by a two-run single from
Jeremy Wayne.
Cairn rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, only to see NYU answer quickly with two runs in the bottom to retake a lead it would never relinquish.
NYU added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to help solidify the victory.
Sy Cohen delivered the big blow with a two-run single.
In the second game, the Violets scored in the first inning on
CJ Picerni's sacrifice fly. NYU added two more runs in the fifth on another Picerni sac fly and a RBI single by
Jonathan Iaione.
Vokulich needed to throw only 72 pitches to record the win and up his record to 3-1 this season. Once again, the defense commited no errors.
"When the pitchers pitch, the hitters hit and the fielders field it makes for a great day."
