The New York University women's tennis team defeated Hamilton College 5-4 on Friday, April 10, in Clinton, NY.
In #1 doubles, junior
Carmen Lai and sophomore
Laila El Dessouki picked up yet another win for NYU, defeating Hamilton's Liz Detwiler and Rachel Friedman 8-2 to remain undefeated during the spring season. However, Hamilton managed to win the final two doubles matches and headed into singles play with the lead.
In singles play, Lai (#1) and senior
Mari Tzakis (#2) picked up straight-set wins, and El Dessouki won a hard-fought three-set match to give the Violets a 4-2 lead.
"Laila had to come back against a strong opponent,' said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy. "She competed well and picked up a big win for us."
The Continentals won the next two matches to even it up at 4-4, and it all came down to the #5 match between the Violets'
Nicole Schnabel and Hamilton's Friedman.
Schnabel dropped the first set, but rallied to win the next two to give NYU their third straight victory.,
"Nicole continued to battle and picked up a big win," added Choy.
The Violets improved to 4-1 in dual matches this season, while the Continentals dropped to 10-5.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Junior Madeline King played well for the Violets in #4 singles, dropping a close match to Hamilton's Claire Keyte 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The Violets return to the court tomorrow to face SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, NY. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
