New York University's new varsity softball team came close to posting its first-ever victory, but fell to Thiel College 7-6 after dropping a 6-3 decision to Transylvania University on Sunday, March 8, in Clermont, FL.
After the Violets (0-4) were defeated by Transylvania 6-3, the squad battled with Thiel in search of the program's first win. NYU took a 4-2 lead over the Tomcats with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but their opponents then scored four in the bottom of the inning.
Trailing 6-4 heading into the top of the seventh, the Violets rallied and tied the score on a double by
Kahala Bonsignore and a single by
Val Schwein.
However, a bases-loaded single in the botton of the frame by the Tomcats' Alana Callahan denied the Violets their first voctory.
"We played our best game so far and we were right on the brink of pulling out our first win," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "I see our progress every day and we'll all be excited to get that first win."
NOTABLES:- In the first game,
Molly Webber hit the program's first-ever home run. Her three-run shot came in the first inning and gave NYU a 3-0 lead.

Sage Scheiwiller pitched 5.1 innings in the first game and allowed four runs (three earned).

Colby Tarsitano went 3-3 in the second game and scored two runs.
- Schwein also had three hits in the nitecap.
The Violets return to action on Tuesday, March 10, when they compete in their first-ever University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. NYU faces Emory University at 10:00 am and Brandeis Univeristy at 1:00 pm. All games will be held at the Seminole County Softball Complex in Altamonte Springs, FL.
"We're all excited to be part of the UAA Championships and compete against with our conference opponents," James added. "This is something that we have all been looking forward to for a long time."
