The New York University baseball team was defeated 5-0 by #9-ranked (
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/D3baseball.com) Emory University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship game at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, FL, on Friday, March 13.
Emory (11-4, 5-1 UAA) took a quick lead with a run in the first inning, then put up singletons again in the third, four and fifth off Violets' starter
Chase DenisonJacob Bader followed Denison with three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out one.
Matthew Millus gave up the Spartans' final run in the ninth.
"Jacob came in and threw strikes and pitched to contact. You get outs that way. That's what you have to do," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. The Violets (3-6, 2-4) had a couple of opportunities to score after Eagles' starter Hans Hansen started with three perfect innings.
Christian Bloom recorded NYU's first hit to lead off the fourth, but was stranded there. He walked with two outs in the sixth, but did not advance.
NYU had runners at the corners with one out in the seventh inning following singles by
CJ Picerni and
David Wagner, but could not plate either one.
In the Violets' ninth, Wagner walked with two outs and Jeremy Wayne reached on an error before Emory's Michael Byman induced Scott Hilbrandt to fly out to left to end the game.
"We just didn't make the crucial pitches when we needed to," Kimbler added.NOTABLES:
- The loss was the third straight for NYU following back-to-back-victories.
- This was the second meeting of the Championship between these two teams. Emory took the first matchup 10-0.
- Denison recorded four strikeouts in his five innings of work.
"We're getting to the point where either the offense is clicking or the pitching is clicking," Kimbler said. "We have to find a way to put those two things together."
The Violets return for their next UAA Championship game tomorrow when they face Brandeis University at 11:00 am.
