Baseball Defeated by Brandeis

Violet Rally Falls Just Short

The New York University baseball team suffered a tough 8-6 loss to Brandeis University on Saturday, March 14, in Sanford, FL.

NYU (3-7, 2-5 UAA) dropped its fourth straight at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship after winning two in a row earlier in the week, including a 2-1 victory over the Judges on Monday.

Brandeis got on the scoreboard first, tallying two runs off of Violets' starter Cameron Serapilio-Frank in the first inning. NYU would bounce back, however, and take a 3-2 lead. The three-run second inning was sparked by a 2-RBI single from Scott Hilbrandt and an RBI double from Michael Vokulich

The Judges regained the lead, scoring two in the fourth and three in the fifth and would hold on for the remainder of the game.

NYU entered the top of the ninth trailing 8-4 and rallied to close the gap to 8-6, but ended the game with the tying runner on second base.

"We have to make sure that we play a full nine innings of baseball every game," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "This is not a game you can just turn on and off."

Highlights:

- Sam Raskin led the Violets with three hits, including a double.

- CJ Picerni had a 2-RBI double during NYU's ninth-inning rally. He is currently hitting .353 this season.

- Christian Bloom and David Wagner each recorded a stolen base.

- Jacob Bader pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one and giving up no hits.

- In the bottom of the eighth, NYU executed a beautiful relay to throw out a Brandeis runner at home plate and get out of the inning. Left fielder Christian Bloom threw a rope to third baseman Billy Griffo, who relayed home to catcher CJ Picerni to tag out the runner.

The Violets and Judges split their two games in Florida, and will meet for a three-game series later this month to open NYU's home schedule at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Series will take place March 28 (doubleheader) and March 29, first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm both days.

NYU will take the field tomorrow March 15. for its final game at the UAA Championship. The squad will take on the University of Rochester at 10am in Sanford, FL.
