Baseball Drops High-Scoring Affair

Violets Defeated by #15 Case Western Reserve 13-12 Despite First Home Run

The New York University baseball team lost to Case Western Reserve University 13-12 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Sanford, FL, on Thursday, March 12.

Despite the loss, the new NYU (3-5, 2-3 UAA) varsity squad experienced a significant event as CJ Picerni hit the program's first home run. His solo bast in the second inning gave the Violets a 6-4 lead over the #15-ranked (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) Spartans (4-1, 4-1).

"It's a good thing for him. It's a good thing for our program," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "The guys got to see what's it like. It's a good feeling."

After Case scored a run off starter Marshall Kramsky in the first, NYU plated five in the bottom, highlighted by RBI singles from Picerni, Jonathan Iaione and Jeremy Wayne, and bases-loaded walks to Christian Pellegrino and Adrian Spitz.

The Spartans, however, scored in each of the first five innings, and again in the seventh, to grab their largest lead of the game, 13-8.

The Violets came right back with four in the bottom of the seventh, capped by another Iaione RBI single, to pull within 13-12.

Neither team scored again, with the game ending on a diving catch by Spartans' left fielder Josh Neal.

"We battled. Guys came through with big hits all the way through," Kimbler added. "I'm just concerned with guys taking fastballs with men in scoring position. If we can put these things together, we can be a good baseball team."

NOTABLES:

- Picerni went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Michael Vokulich also knocked in three runs. He added a double and a walk.

- Matthew Wells pitched a perfect inning of relief, striking out one, to keep the Violets within striking distance.

"Matt came in and threw strikes. When you throw strikes, you get people out," Kimbler said.

-  Spitz had two hits, scored two runs, walked, and stole a base in addition to his RBI.

- Wayne and Christian Bloom each had two of NYU's 11 hits.

The Violets return to action tomorrow when they face Emory University in another UAA Championship game. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
