The New York University women's tennis team opened its 2015 spring season by defeating Swarthmore College 6-3 in Swarthmore, PA, on Saturday, February 28.
After falling behind in doubles 2-1, the Violets stormed back to win their first three singles matches. Junior
Carmen Lai (#1),
senior Mari Tzakis (#2) and sophomore
Laila El Dessouki (#3) each won in straight sets to give NYU a 4-2 lead.
"Our first three singles players all got of to a fast start. That put a little less pressure on numbers four, five and six," said NYU Head Coach
Horace Choy.
After the momentum shifted in the direction of the Violets, junior
Madeline King and freshman
Nicole Schnabel each won in straight sets, as well, to give the Violets the victory.
"Madeline continued her solid play, winning her match," Choy said. "Nicole rounded out the scoring by winning her first career match easily, as well."
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:- Lai and El Dessouki, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region in doubles heading into the spring, continued their strong play with a convincing 8-3 win at #1.
The Violets return to the court for the Middlebury Invitational on March 13-15, in Middlebury, VT.
