Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls 59-46 at WashU

Read Notches Sixth-Career Double-Double

The New York University women's basketball team was defeated 59-46 on the road in St. Louis, MO, on Friday night, February 20, by Washington University-St. Louis.

The Violets (20-3, 9-3 University Athletic Association), who entered the night ranked #11 by D3hoops.com and #13 by USA Today, had a tough night in the paint against the #9/9 Bears (21-2, 10-2 UAA). Washington controlled NYU on the boards, outrebounding the Violets 46-41 overall and 22-13 on the offensive glass. In addition, the Bears held a 32-24 advantage in points in the paint and 26-13 on second-chance points.

"That certainly is what WashU does, they're one of the best rebounding teams in the country," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We didn't do a great job of boxing out or pursuing those defensive rebounds, but I was very proud of the way our girls hung in there in a game that wasn't particularly pretty."

NYU was led by Kaitlyn Read's team-high 15 points and game-best 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and sixth of her career. In addition, the sophomore guard also led all players with four steals and a career-high-tying two blocks.

"She's a warrior; I'm glad she's on my team," continued Hall-Gregory. "We've just got to continue to see people have those sorts of performances, which we certainly have more players on our team capable of doing that."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU found its forwards in foul trouble early on as Lindsey Oldshue (3), Megan Dawe (2), Emily Rowe (2), and Maya Wasowicz (2) collected nine total fouls in the first half.

- Neither team found success from beyond the arc. The Bears were 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from long range, while the Violets were 2-of-17 (11.8 percent).

- NYU was 10-of-22 from the foul line, compared to Washington's 13-of-19.

- Megan Dawe chipped in nine points and four rebounds in just 20 minutes.

"We tried to tough out possesions and made a run there at the end that I felt really good about," said Hall-Gregory. "We just needed to put a couple more runs together and have some more composure on offense. But I'm really proud of the way that they battled, hung in there and played tough."

The Violets will return to the court when they face the University of Chicago on Sunday, February 22. Tipoff in Chicago, IL, is scheduled for 2:00 pm CT/3:00 pm ET. Live stats and live video will be available.
