USA Today) NYU (20-4, 9-4 University Athletic Association) now sits in third place in the Association standings, while the Maroons (18-6, 12-1 UAA) are in the top spot with just one loss in UAA competition.
The Violets controlled the game early on and held as much as a five-point lead (14-9) at the 13:28 mark in the first half. From that point on, Chicago was able to gain the momentum to take the lead, one which it would never relinquish.
"I believe that Chicago is a top-10 team, and against that good of a team if you get down by 11, it is hard to crawl yourself back," said NYU Head Coach
Lauren Hall-Gregory. "Part of our game plan was we really wanted to try to keep the game in the 60's. We felt like if it was a grind-it-out style, we had a lot of confidence that our players could grind it out."
In what turned out to be a defensive battle, neither team had too much success shooting the ball. The Violets were 19-of-54 (35.2 percent) from the floor, while Chicago shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55). The Maroons did hold the advantage over NYU (2-of-14, 14.3 percent) in three-point shooting, as they were 6-of-18 (33.3 percent).
In addition, each squad got to the foul line 22 times. Chicago made 18 (81.8 percent), while the Violets made 15 (68.2 percent).
HIGHLIGHTS: -
Amy Harioka led the Violets with 16 points. The sophomore guard also had a career-high-tying six rebounds, two steals and a block.
"Amy is a great player for us because she does the little things that make her teammates around her better. Scoring is just an added benefit for her," said Hall-Gregory. "I love it when she's aggressively shooting. She's got such a high-percentage shot from beyond the three-point line because she takes good shots. She's a really efficient and smart player."
-
Megan Dawe and
Kaitlyn Read finished with 10 points apiece. Dawe also grabbed four boards, while Read was 6-of-8 from the foul line and had a team-best eight rebounds, a game-high-tying three steals and an assist.
-
Melissa Peng, in her final regular-season road contest as a Violet, led all players with four assists. The senior point guard also had eight points, three rebounds and a steal in a team-high 34 minutes.
-
Emily Rowe saw 19 minutes for NYU, finishing with six points and six rebounds.
"There's no other group of players out there that I would rather coach," continued Hall-Gregory. "I know what I'm going to get every day at practice in terms of their effort and their energy and how hard they compete. I think the important thing for us after a tough weekend against two top teams is to get a good couple nights of rest and then get ready for Brandeis [University]."
NYU will return to action for its regular-season finale on Saturday, February 28, against Brandeis on Senior Day at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm with
