Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie at Emory

Violets and Eagles End in 2OT Stalemate

The New York University women's soccer team and Emory University held each other to a 1-1 tie in a double-overtime contest on Sunday afternoon, November 1, in Atlanta, GA.

The Violets (12-4-1, 2-3-1 University Athletic Association) and Eagles (7-6-4, 0-3-3 UAA) held one another scoreless for the entirety of the first half. It was not until just after the second half begun that NYU was able to break through for the game's first score.

In the 47th minute, the Violets' Melissa Menta sent a cross in front of the Eagle net where teammate Megan Carver was able to sneak one through the legs of the Emory keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

"We weren't getting as much on the offensive end as we would have liked in the first half," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "The girls did a great job making some adjustments at halftime to get some better opportunities in the second half."

NYU was able to hold that lead until the 69th minute when Emory's Cristina Ramirez scored the equalizer. Neither team attempted a shot on goal in either overtime period and the Violets picked up their first tie of the season -- it was the fourth of the year (third UAA) for the Eagles.

"It was unfortunate that we were unable to finish some of the other chances we had in the second half and overtime," continued Canning.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Carver's goal ties her for the team lead (5). The rookie midfielder now leads the Violets in points (12). She led all players on Sunday with three shots on goal.

- Menta, who scored NYU's game-winner on Friday night at the University of Rochester, notched her second assist of the season against the Eagles.

- Cassie Steinberg recorded four stops in net for the Violets.

NYU will return to the pitch for its final contest of the regular season next Saturday, November 7, on the road against Brandies University in Waltham, MA. Kick-off between the Violets and Judges is scheduled for 11:00 am.

"It was great to get four points on the road this weekend and now we're looking forward to playing another tough team and finishing out the UAA and regular season," said Canning.
