The New York University women's volleyball team hosted the first University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin on Saturday and Sunday, October 3-4, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
After dropping their two matches on Saturday, the Violets (9-10, 0-3 UAA) faced off with the University of Rochester (11-9, 1-2) on Sunday. NYU was unable to overcome a tough first set and fell to the Yellowjackets in three (25-10, 25-17, 25-17).
"Having a young team that is still learning to work together has its highs and its lows, and I think that today was one of our low moments as a group," said NYU Head Coach
Jolie Ward. "Not because we're not able to play the game physically, but I think that with all the effort we exerted yesterday mentally we just came out flat today. Against an experienced team like Rochester we don't have the ability just yet to fight that, but that will come as we continue to play together."
Leading the way for the Violets on Sunday was
Shelby King and
Nicole Frias. Each notched a team-high six kills, while Frias swung .235 and King added three digs.
HIGHLIGHTS:-
Brooke Tannahill led all players with a match-best 22 digs. The sophomore captain also added three assists.
-
Elissa Davila-Shiau (14) and
Daryl Mitchell (7) split the setting duties for NYU.
After a 10-day break, the Violets will return to action for a mid-week clash in Hoboken, NJ, on Wednesday, October 14. NYU will face the Stevens Institute of Technology with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm.
