The New York University women's volleyball team won a pair of matches on day two of the NY Region Challenge on Halloween Saturday, October 31, in Rochester, NY.
The Violets (15-16) pulled out a five-set thriller (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 11-25, 15-13) against Montclair State University (17-12) to start the day.
NYU took an early lead in the match with
Nicole Frias clinching the first set with a kill. She totalled seven kills for the match.
The Violets dropped the second set, but earned a hard-fought victory in the third, which ended on another kill from Frias.
Strong serving from the Red Hawks in the fourth set gave them the advantage.
The Violets came back in the final set with crucial kills from
Shelby King securing the win.
Strong blocking from Frias and Rayne Ellis also contributed to the victory, with each notching 3.5 blocks.
"Our blocking was crucial to our performance today. Both Frias and Ellis had a major presence throughout both matches," said Head Coach Jolie Ward.
NYU's second match was a three-set sweep (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) over Fredonia State University (22-10).King led the Violets to victory, totaling 13 kills and 10 digs for the match.
Ellis was a strong force on the front line for NYU, finishing the contest with five blocks and six kills.
"After yesterday's losses, it was good to see the team come together and finish the weekend with two wins," Ward said.
MATCH ONE HIGHLIGHTS:- King finished the contest with 15 kills.

Daryl Mitchell contributed 42 assists and 11 digs.

Stephanie Mao totaled 17 digs.
MATCH TWO HIGHLIGHTS:-
Patricia Stirb finished the contest with 3.5 blocks.
- Frias totaled five blocks and five kills, while
Brooke Tannahill totaled 15 digs.
The Violets are back in action at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday-Saturday, November 6-7, hosted by the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.
