Women's Soccer Bests St. Joe's 5-0 Thursday

Violets Pick up 10th Victory of Season

The New York University women's soccer team picked up its 10th victory of the season on Thursday night, October 22, with a 5-0 win against St. Joseph's College-Long Island at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets (10-4) controlled the pace of the match against the Golden Eagles (5-9-1) throughout, finishing the contest with a 27-1 advantage in total shots, including 18-1 in shots on goal.

"I'm really proud of how the girls approached the game because we've had three really tough games in a row," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "They came out with a lot of energy and it's great to get the win."

NYU's offensive effort began in the 25th minute when Megan Carver took the ball off a throw-in from Maddy Clappin and launched her shot across the box from 35 yards for her fourth score of the season. The Violets took the 2-0 advantage in the 44th minute when McKennah Spagnola broke free at midfield and split the St. Joe's defense for a breakaway and converted for her fourth of the year, as well.

The home team scored three more in the second half. In the 56th minute, Olivia Braender-Carr capitalized on a Golden Eagle turnover at the top-corner of the box and emulated Carver's shot from the first half with a lob of her own that went in over the St. Joseph's goalkeeper's head. Leading 3-0, Lexi Clarke took Clappin's lead pass through the middle to sneak through for NYU's second breakaway of the game in the 79th minute to give the Violets the 4-0 lead. Nicole Malen closed out the offense in the 86th minute. The rookie scored her first-collegiate goal after fellow freshman Meredith Hackerson sent a cross in front for Malen to convert.

The Violets will return to the pitch for their last non-conference contest of the regular season when they host Centenary College on Monday night, October 26, at Gaelic Park for a scheduled 7:00 pm kickoff.
