The New York University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Washington University-St. Louis in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, October 16, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets (9-3, 1-2 UAA) are currently ranked #16 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), while the Bears (12-1, 3-0 UAA) are ranked #7.
The teams played to a scoreless first half, with neither side mounting much of an offensive attack.
The only score of the contest came at the 60:12 mark. After Washington's Olivia Lillegraven had her shot blocked in front of the net, the ball bounced to Rachel Mickelson who beat NYU goalkeeper
Cassie Steinberg to the left post.
NYU increased its pressure in the second half, recording six of its 10 shots and all four corner kicks in the final 45 minutes. The Violets' best opportunity at tying the score came with just over 10 minutes left when
Jess Wong drove a shot toward the top of the net from approximately 25-feet ou, but Bears' keeper Lizzy Crist punched it over the net.
For the contest, Washington had a 19-10 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also led 5-4 in corner kicks.
"It was a tough UAA battle against a top-10 team," said NYU Head Coach
Michele Canning. "We just came up short."
