Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 at Home vs. Baruch

Violets Score Two in the First in Loss to Bearcats

The New York University men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 defeat on Monday night, October 12, at home against Baruch College at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets (4-8) and Beartcats (7-5) had an eventful first half as the two teams combined for four goals. NYU's David Victor, in his second-career game, started off the offense with a long shot from 35 yards out to the right of the box. The rookie was able to get it past Baruch goalkeeper Xavier Carrillo for his first collegiate goal to give the Violets the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

"David beat his defender on the outside -- I actually didn't expect him to shoot it -- but we've been talking to the guys about putting the ball in the box when you're at that angle," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant. "He put it at the exact right spot; I'm not so sure he was trying to score, but luckily it went in."

The Bearcats would get one back in the 17th minute as Edward Humphreys beat NYU goalkeeper Aaron Hoffman -- the senior made his first-career start on Monday -- in a one-on-one situation. Baruch then took the 2-1 lead in the 24th minute when Diego Alvarado juggled the ball at the top of the box, turned and fired one past Hoffman.

Just under five minute later, Bryan Walsh was able to push through for the Violets and knot it up at 2-2 in the 30th minute. Nic Notaro started the play with a shot in the box that was stopped by Carrillo, but Walsh followed up and scored on the rebound.

"Walsh found himself in the right position just by sheer work rate to make sure he put it in the goal," continued Wyant. "He played very well up top, where he hasn't played much this year, and he was very active and effective tonight."

The next serious scoring chance for NYU came in the 65th minute. Walsh once again had the shot and put it past the Baruch keeper. Unfortunately, an ill-timed offsides call negated the score that would have given the Violets the 3-2 lead at the time.

Baruch would take advantage and convert on a chance of its own in the 78th minute. Oshae Miller of the Bearcats was able to take a lead pass and loft a shot over the head of NYU's Grant Engel -- the rookie started the second half in net for the Violets -- for the eventual game-winner.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Walsh, Notaro and Victor led NYU with two shots on goal apiece.

- Hoffman made four saves and Engel recorded three as the two combined for 90:00 minutes. Gregory Suter pitched in as well, recording a defensive save in the 15th minute.

"We had a road trip over the weekend and we have a lot of guys who needed some rest," said Wyant. "We played a lot of fresh players, and goalkeepers as well. Richie Cornell and Gregory Suter each played very well for us on the backend."

The Violets will return to the pitch on Friday afternoon when they host #17 Washington University-St. Louis in their third University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm following the completion of the women's contest.
