The New York University women's soccer team, ranked #23 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Poll, lost 1-0 in two overtimes to #5 Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, October 10, in Pittsburgh, PA.
The matchup was NYU's first University Athletic Asociation (UAA) road game of the season and ended the Violets' eight-game winning streak.
The game was deadlocked until the Tartens' Amelia Clark scored her first goal of the season with 6:19 remaining in the second overtime period off a corner kick taken by Tori Iatarola. The contest had remained scoreless until then due mainly to the outstanding play of NYU junior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg, who had turned away Carnegie Mellon's first nine shots.
"Cassie was terrific and allowed us the opportunity to stay in the game," said Head Coach Michele Canning. Carnegie Mellon (11-0-1, 2-0 UAA) outshot NYU (9-2, 1-1 UAA) 13-5 overall, 10-2 in shots on goal and had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
However, despite the statistical disparity, the Violets still had a chance to record a victory until the game-ending goal.
"It was a great game and a great effort from our side," said Canning. "Carnegie is a tough team. It's disappointing, but I'm proud of the way we played."
