NYU 3 Baruch 1

The New York University men's soccer team defeated Baruch College 3-1 at the Met Oval in Queens, NY, on Friday night, August 29, to start the 2014 season with a victory.

The Violets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Baruch, with both goals coming from freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

Starting the second half with a 2-0 lead, the Violets added another score to the board to jump ahead 3-0. NYU would finish the contest with the 3-1 victory.

"The guys played very well today and were able to score a few very nice goals," NYU Head Coach Joe Behan said. "All three were good team goals during which everyone worked very well together. At the same time, we all know we have a lot of things to work on and we are looking still to improve in certain areas."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Junior goalkeeper Nico Cantor made his second career start, earning the victory while making two saves.

"Nico Cantor was outstanding in goal," Behan said. "He started and finished the game and played very well."

- A pair of young Violets, sophomore forward Reece Barton and freshman defender Liam Stimpson, led NYU with three points apiece. Stimpson scored the Violets' second goal of the contest, hitting it off the post and in. It came off an assist down the field from sophomore midfielder Hector Rojas. Barton's score came at the beginning of the second half to put NYU up by three.

- Another freshman, midfielder Vegas Kastberg, notched his first career goal to give the Violets their 1-0 initial lead.

NYU will look to string together back-to-back victories to start the season when it plays Brooklyn College in its 2014 home-opener on Saturday night, August 30, at 7:00 pm at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. Live stats and live video will be available at gonyuathletics.com.
