The New York University women's fencing team hosted the NYU Invitational at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Saturday, January 25. The Violets competed against six of the top teams in the country.
NYU began the day against #5 Ohio State University, falling to the Buckeyes 24-3. Next the Violets took on Wayne State University and earned the 17-10 win over the Warriors for their lone victory of the day. In the third round of competition, NYU faced #10 St. John's University, but fell to the Red Storm 20-7.
Yale University was next up for NYU, but the Violets dropped their closest match of the day to the Bulldogs, 14-13. In round five, the Violets met the #3 University of Notre Dame and fell to the Fighting Irish 19-8 in a tough match. In its final contest of the day, NYU squared off with #7 Northwestern University, but fell to the Wildcats 22-5.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Competing in sabre, senior captain
Kelsey Gibson finished with a 9-7 record. Also performing well in sabre, freshman
Cydney Williams finished with eight wins on the day.
- Junior captain
Audra Fox led the team in wins with a final record of 10-8 in foil.
- In their win against the Warriors, the Violets performed exceptionally well by winning in epee 8-1.
NYU is back in action at the Boston Invitational in Waltham, MA, on Saturday, February 1.
