The New York University men's soccer team defeated the College of Staten Island by a score of 2-1 on Saturday, September 7, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
With the win, NYU stays a perfect 4-0-0 on the season, while Staten Island falls to 1-3-0.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Violets dominated possession in the early going and had several close scoring opportunities before
Chris Ramirez broke through with his second goal of the season in the 20th minute.
- The Dolphins, however, would respond quickly, as Horatio Reid scored the lone Staten Island goal just 1:45 later, knotting the score at one apiece.
- The tie would persist deep into the second half despite NYU outshooting Staten Island by a margin of 22-6 for the game.
- The Violets ultimately would break the tie in the 67th minute, as
Shawn McNitt-Gray notched his first goal of the year courtesy of an assist from Nimo Freitag Bergstroem.
- The Dolphins seriously challenged to tie the game on one more occasion, when in the 78th minute, Thomas Vazquez launched a shot from the top of the box which resulted in a diving save from Violet keeper Lucas Doucette.
"I was pleased with our ability to remain focused, especially after missing some good scoring chances on breakaways," explained Head Coach
Joe Behan. "Shawn put away the eventual game-winning goal with great poise."
NYU returns to action on Wedensday, September 11, when they take on the City College of New York in a home contest at Gaelic Park. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.
