Men's Basketball Season Comes to an End

Violets Fall 74-66 in ECAC Metro Championship

Yaffe scored 18 points in his final game for the Violets.

The New York University men's basketball team dropped a 74-66 decision to New Jersey City University in the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championship Tournament on Wednesday, February 27, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
 
The #3-seeded Violets (15-11) led 28-23 at halftime. But, the #6-seeded Gothic Knights (15-12) took the lead for good on Khalid Muhammad's three-pointer with 15:07 remaining. Jersey City increased its advantage to a game-high 15 points, 67-52, on Drew Marley's two free throws with 4:02 left.
 
NYU was able to cut its deficit to six points, 67-61, on Iyoha Agho's four-point play with 2:09 remaining, but that was as close as the Violets got the rest of the way.
 
NYU's largest lead of the game, 28-20, came with 1:36 left in the first half following a pair of free throws from Kyle Stockmal.
 
In the final game of his four-year career, Carl Yaffe led the Violets with 18 points, finishing in fifth place on NYU's all-time scoring list with 1,365 points. He also ended his career tied with former teammate Andy Stein for seventh in school history in career field goals (498), as well as 12th in career field goal percentage (49.7%).
 
Highlights
 
- Stockmal totaled a team-high five assists and finished with seven points. He concluded his four-year NYU career 23rd on the all-time scoring list with 1,074 points. Stockmal will also leave the Violets as the program's all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage (42.2%), third in career three-pointers made (201) and third in free-throw percentage (77.5%).
 
- Devin Karch had 13 points and four rebounds for NYU. He finished the year with a field goal percentage of 59.8%, the sixth-highest mark in a season in school history.
 
- Agho finished with a career-high 10 points, hitting 3-4 from three-point range.
 
- Max Wein concluded his NYU career with a game-high eight rebounds while also adding seven points. The fifth and final senior, Cory Stockmal, played 15 minutes off the bench.
 
- Muhammad led all scorers with 23 points, while Josh Caver and Asmar Edwards each had 13 for New Jersey City.
