Wrestling Team to Compete at Madison Square Garden this Sunday

NYU Invited to Take Part in Prestigious Grapple at the Garden

The New York University wrestling team is set to compete against Stevens Institute of Technology in the second annual Grapple at the Garden, on Sunday, December 1, at Madison Square Garden.

The dual match, scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm, will be one of many to take place at the Garden during the event. The full day of wrestling on December 1 will include two dual-meet sessions.

NYU is currently ranked #19 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll.

The team is off to another strong start this year, opening with a 2-1 dual meet record. The grapplers have posted wins over Elizabethtown College (21-18) and King's College (31-20) and have produced solid performances at the Ithaca College Invitational and the New York State Collegiate Championship.

Individually, Patrick Sheehan has already been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week twice this season. The #7-ranked junior co-captain defeated #3-ranked 184-pounder Julian Meaney during NYU's victory over Elizabethtown. Last season, Sheehan qualified for the NCAA Chamionships at 184 pounds after finishing second at the NCAA East Regional Championships.

Brandon Jones, who will make his season debut at Madison Square Garden, is currently the #2-ranked 141-pound wrestler in the nation according to the latest NWCA Division III Individual Poll. Last season, Jones earned All-America honors in the 133-pound weight class after finishing fifth at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Head Coach Bruce Haberli and the grapplers were featured in an article in Tuesday's edition of The Record, previewing the team's upcoming contest at Madison Square Garden.

"It is an honor to have been invited to participate in the Grapple at the Garden event," Haberli said. "Not only is it a great opportunity for our wrestlers to compete against one of our biggest rivals, but it is also a special privilege to do so at one of America's greatest and most storied venues, Madison Square Garden, right here in NYU's own backyard. My wrestlers and I look forward to adding to the excitement and energy of this incredible event."
