Meet Results
New York University's women's swimming and diving team dominated in its season opener on Saturday, October 12, against SUNY Cortland at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan. The final score was 189-101.
This is the fourth consecutive season that NYU has defeated SUNY Cortland in the first meet of the season.
Junior
Emily Doerner, a big contributor to the team in the past two seasons, won the 100-yard backstroke (
1:00.22), the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.39) and participated on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (
1:50.48) alongside freshman
Michelle Kierencew, sophomore
Krista Traub and freshman
Sela Wang.
Highlights:

Nia Sorgente and
Ashlie Pankonin both came very close to the NCAA qualifying score in their first meet. Sorgente came in first place in the one-meter with a score of 252.75 and placed second in the three-meter with a score of 236.18. Pankonin won the three-meter (250.35) and came in second place in the one-meter (246.21).
"Great start for our freshmen here at NYU diving," said Diving Coach
Scott Donie. "Everybody seems to be relaxed and having fun. I'm looking forward to moving up from here."

Joanna Kostin began her collegiate career by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (
10:37.87) and the 500-yard freestyle (
5:15.45)

Michelle Kierencew took first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (
1:09.11) and 200-yard breaststroke (
2:32.85).
"The team has been working really hard over the past few weeks and it was great to see them finally get up and race," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "We have a lot of training ahead of us, but it was great to get off to a fast start."
The Violets' next competition will be at the University of Rochester Invitational in Rochester, NY, on
Friday and Saturday, October 25-26.
