The New York University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Case Western Reserve University in the Violets' University Athletic Association (UAA) home opener on Saturday, October 12, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The teams played 110 minutes, but all of the scoring came within a two-minute span early in the first half.
The Spartans (5-3-4, 0-1-1) tallied first when Matthew Zembas scored at 8:40. After collecting a loose ball that had just clanged off the post following a shot from Jacob Grindel, Zembas drilled the rebound past NYU keeper Lucas Doucette.
The Violets (6-3-3, 0-1-1) did not trail for long, however. Bryan Walsh scored his second goal of the season at 10:36, getting in past the Spartans' Frank Candau off an assist from Tim Goldman following a free kick.
Neither team was able to score again over the final 99 minutes.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Case Western outshot NYU 16-7.
- NYU led in corner kicks 5-3.
- Each goalkeeper made five saves, one each in the second overtime.
- Walsh and
Justin Suter each attempted two shots for the Violets.
The Violets return to action on Friday, October 18, when they face UAA opponent Emory University in Atlanta, GA, beginning at 5:00pm.
