Women's Fencing Hosts NYU Invitational

Violets Defeat Wayne State and Yale During 2-4 Finish

The New York University women's fencing team hosted the NYU Invitational on Sunday, January 27, at the Jerome Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets had strong showings against Division I competition, as they defeated Wayne State University 17-10 and Yale University 15-12 en route to a 2-4 finish on the day.

NYU was defeated by their other four opponents. The Violets fell to Ohio State University 22-5, St. John's University 25-2, the University of Notre Dame 25-2, and Northwestern University 23-4.
 
Highlights:
-Vivian Yung led the team in wins, compiling a record of 8-9 in epee.
 
- Audra Fox and Jackie Leval both earned seven victories while Ericka Persson won six contests during the competition.
 
-In the Violet's victory over Wayne State, Yung, Christiana Lai and Gemma Dadourian combined to go 7-2 in epee. In sabre, Leval, Persson and Kelsey Gibson helped NYU go 6-3.
 
-NYU was able to earn a victory over Yale thanks to a 6-3 advantage in epee. Yung, Lai and Jess Sherman combined to earn all six wins.
 
“Overall, there were some great individual results today,” said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. “We fenced against all division 1 teams and took good bouts against all of them.”
 
The Violets return to action with a busy weekend in New England. First, NYU will compete against Tufts University on Saturday, February 2. On the following day, the team will compete in the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by MIT in Cambridge, MA.
