Haberli Notches 200th Career Win as Wrestling Team Cruises

Coach Earns Milestone Victory as Grapplers Win Two

NYU extended its win streak to nine matches as Head Coach Bruce Haberli's collected win #200 at NYU.
It was a sensational day of competition for the New York University wrestling program as the grapplers extended their win streak to nine matches and Head Coach Bruce Haberli recorded his 200th career NYU victory on Saturday, January 26, in Lexington, VA.

Heading the wrestling program since the 1995-96 season, Haberli has compiled a 201-153-3 (.568) career record at NYU and continues to elevate the program into the national spotlight. The team is currently ranked #20 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll and sits atop the Centennial Conference standings.

“I don't follow my career win total or anything like that too closely,” Haberli said. “But, it's a testament to the number of great guys we've had come through this program over the years. It was nice to get number 200 against a great program like Johns Hopkins University and to do it with this group of guys. We still have some work to do, but overall today was a success.”

NYU beat Centennial Conferences foes Johns Hopkins and Washington and Lee University, 22-12 and 36-7, respectively. The grapplers improved to 11-1 on the season and remained undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record.

Highlights:

-Matt DiGiovanni set the tempo for NYU in the dual against Johns Hopkins, earning a win in the 157-pound weight class despite being a regular 149-pound grappler. DiGiovanni also recorded a win against Washington and Lee to finish 2-0 on the day.

-Patrick Sheehan (184), Anthony Chu (285) and Sam Galassi (197) went on the attack late in their respective matches against their opponents from Johns Hopkins, each winning in the last 30 seconds of the third period. Chu also went on to record a pin in his match against Washington and Lee.

-Dan Brereton finished 2-0, earning a win against Washington and Lee as well as in an exhibition match against Johns Hopkins.

-David Rice recorded a major decision in the Hopkins dual.

-Johns Hopkins is the defending Centennial Conference Champion and just returned from the National Duals.

"We are very pleased with our performance today, especially beating a quality team in Johns Hopkins," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "It was great to get Bruce his 200th win aginst such an impressive program, and we are very happy for him."

NYU will look to extend its win streak and stay atop the Centennial Conference standings next Saturday, February 2, against Muhlenberg College and Gettysburg College in Allenstown, PA.
