The New York University wrestling team defeated Centennial Conference foe United States Merchant Marine Academy 21-19 in an exciting back-and-forth match on Wednesday, January 16, at the Jerome S. Coles Center in Manhattan.
 
With the win, NYU is now 9-1 overall and 2-0 in Centennial Conference duals. The grapplers have also won seven straight duals dating back to November 10 against King's College.
 
Highlights
 
- NYU jumped out to an early 15-point lead thanks to wins by Janik Santana-Quintana (125), Sean Billings (133), Richy Cruz (141), and Matt DiGiovanni (149).
 
- After Merchant Marine pulled back within two points of NYU, Patrick Sheehan came up with a clutch pin in the 184-pound match.
 
- Anthony Chu (285) avoided a pin in the final match of the dual to clinch a victory for NYU.
 
- The triumph was Head Coach Bruce Haberli's 199th win of his 18-year career.
 
The grapplers will return to the mats on Saturday, January 19, in Riverdale, NY, for the College of Mount Saint Vincent Invitational.
