Paolo Luciano's penalty kick with 10.9 seconds remaining lifted the 10th-ranked New York University men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, September 19, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Luciano converted the last-second PK to keep the Violets undefeated at 7-0 to start the season. The Mariners dropped to 4-3 on the year.
Highlights
- The penalty kick came after a last-minute stretch in which NYU put major pressure on Merchant Marine while trying to win the game in regulation. After a
Mickey Ingerman corner with 30 seconds left, the ball came out to
Niki Chow, whose shot was blocked by the hand of a Mariner defender in the box.
- Luciano's PK ended a tense game in which the Violets outshot Merchant Marine 18-5 and held a 6-1 edge in corners.
- Luciano had one of NYU's best chances just 4:44 into the second half, ripping a shot from 20 yards out that the goalkeeper got just enough of a hand on to deflect off the crossbar.
- The Violets also had a great pair of chances on headers in the second half. In the 71st minute,
Ryan Horch played a beautiful long ball into the box that Nimo Freitag Bergstroem headed high. Eight minutes later, Ingerman played a corner that
Ryan Heine headed at goal, but Stephen Fucito made the save.
-
Jonas Poster made two stops in goal for NYU, extending the squad's streak of consecutive shutout minutes to 377:42.
“You're not going to get a better finish than that,” said Violet Head Coach
Joe Behan. “I thought we possessed the ball well, but they had a good game plan. The guys off the bench gave us a spark, and that was a great strike by Paolo to win it.”
NYU returns to action on Monday, September 24, for a road contest against Hunter College. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm at Randall's Island Field #10.
