Brandeis University edged New York University 5-4 on Friday, April 27, at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Tennis Championship at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL. The Violets will now play in the seventh-place match against the University of Rochester on Friday evening.
NYU fell into a 2-1 deficit in the doubles competition.
Connor Witty and
Steven Wu fell 8-3 at #1,
Ting Yee Lai and William Smithline lost 8-4 at #2, and
CJ Leong and
Bowen Xu narrowly pulled out a 9-7 victory at #3.
In singles action,
Steven Wu tied the score 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the second slot. Witty lost a heartbreaker at #1, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and Leong was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in third singles.
Working out of a 4-2 hole,
James Dean brought the Violets within one with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #4 singles.
Tim Wu then pulled NYU into a tie at 4-4, pulling out a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision at #5.
In the deciding match, despite taking the first set,
Ting Yee Lai fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"We missed some opportunities to win, but I thought we played well enough to get the victory," said NYU head coach
Horace Choy. "There is some disappointment with the results. There were a couple of close line calls, but we have to keep focused and get ready for the next match."
